You love to surf. You’ve always been into it since the time you had your first surfboard, a 21st birthday gift from your brother. Your main concern however is you can only surf when you find yourself in Hawaii for a vacation or in Siargao, Philippines when you visit the country.

Then your local government unit has come up with ways to save the ocean, the marine life that thrives in it, and put some artificial reefs to encourage fish and other marine creatures to populate the place. You might be amazed however that these artificial reefs also serve as the breakwater, producing surfable waves in the process. This is when you discover how to reef surf.

To go on a reef surf is the same thing as natural surfing only that it is done while riding on waves that are produced by the reefs surrounding the entire beach area. It won’t matter if the reefs are made of the natural stuff or artificial, what matters is that the wave it is creating becomes manna from heaven for reef surf addicts.

You must be warned though that reef surfing can be more challenging than doing surfing on natural waves. Reefs that are formed naturally have spikes in them and they are solid as a rock which makes it deadly if you’ll fall off your surf board. If falling is inevitable, wearing a helmet will give you protection. Of course you don’t want to end up having a head cut or suffering from a concussion, right? Or you might just have your dignity crushed after a heavy fall which could have been avoided if you weren’t showing off your skills that much.

Never forget that reef surfing is a dangerous and challenging adventure but safety must be first priority when you go into the water in the intention of riding huge waves. Think of safety first. This way, you get to experience the joys of surfing with more confidence and excitement. When you know that you have the right gear, doing the right moves, and through this, you are aware that you are not in harm’s way.

Popular beaches the world over offer reef surfing from the El Segundo Beach in California and the Cable Beach in Perth to the beach in Boscombe, UK that is known to have larger waves by 30%.

This information can be a cause of celebration among surfers since they can be in the US or in the South Pacific or the UK and still can reef surf anytime they like.

When you find yourself in the Philippines, you can always go to Siargao. Happy surfing!
